Sail In a Gajeta
Discover sailing in a gajeta: an educational journey
If you want to experience something special, our educational sailing program in the museum’s gajeta Marija offers a unique opportunity. During July and August, once a week, we will sail the old labor routes of the inhabitants of the island of Murter, enjoying the coastal landscape.
Our expert staff will provide you with a deeper understanding of the context and circumstances that shaped the coastal landscape of the island of Murter and its surrounding waters. You will learn more about everyday life and the trips to the fields for which a sturdy, labor boat was essential. Our gajeta Marija, an old Betina gajeta built in 1922 and restored in 2021 in Betina, perfectly illustrates the crucial role of wooden boats in the life of islanders in the past. During the trip, you will discover that Marija was used not only to transport people and tools, but also domestic animals such as horses and oxen, as well as large machinery like tractors, sand, olives, grapes, watermelons, melons, various vegetable crops – everything that Dalmatian farmers once produced on their island and mainland estates and sold along the coastal towns. Even today, though with a different role, the sense of security and connection to tradition that being on a wooden boat provides is incomparable.
The program is intended for everyone, lasts about 2 hours, and includes sailing (and/or rowing if desired) in a traditional wooden boat, guided by the museum staff, with an optional short break at Prosika in an authentic setting. You can sign up at our Museum or at the Betina Tourist Board office.
