Horst Kistner: Turn on the Lights!

In the space between photography, cinema, and classical painting emerges the world of Horst Kistner — a German artist whose works captivate through their striking atmosphere, meticulously crafted lighting, and quiet yet powerful narratives.

The new exhibition Turn on the Lights! presents a selection of photographs that immerse viewers in timeless scenes inspired by the aesthetics of 1950s American cinema, American Realism painting, and the works of masters such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt. Owing to his extraordinary treatment of light, Kistner is often described as a “master of light” in the tradition of the old masters.

Although working within the medium of photography, his creative process is closer to film directing than to conventional photography. Each work begins with a visual idea developed through sketches and notes, before evolving into carefully constructed studio scenes reminiscent of theatrical stage sets. Models, props, architecture, and lighting are all meticulously arranged to give every image its own atmosphere and inner dramaturgy.

What distinguishes Kistner’s work is the fact that each scene is created physically, without digital manipulation or the use of artificial intelligence. He embraces an analogue approach to image-making, relying on the patient shaping of light and space. The result is a series of photographs that resemble cinematic stills suspended in time — scenes filled with nostalgia, intimacy, and mystery.

His compositions leave ample room for personal interpretation. Every photograph suggests a story without ever fully revealing it. It is precisely within this openness that the strength of Kistner’s work resides: the viewer becomes an active participant, invited to complete the narrative through personal experience and emotion.

Horst Kistner (Würzburg, 1969) studied photography at the renowned Lette-Verein Berlin. After more than two decades working in food and still life photography, he turned his focus toward fine art photography. Today, he is regarded as one of the notable contemporary figures in German art photography, with his work attracting collectors and audiences across Europe.

The exhibition Turn on the Lights presents a world in which light is not merely a technical element of photography, but the central bearer of emotion, atmosphere, and narrative.

The exhibition Turn on the Lights! opens on June 3 and will remain on view for one month.
