Rowing, that is, driving a gajeta can be done by 4 or 5 people. There are 5 rowing spots: parada (the stern oar holder) pri krmom (at the stern), srida (mezarija, the middle), ala banka and prova ( bow). The bow oar is 20 cm longer than the other oars.
Before boats had motor engines, the distance between two places was calculated by the time necessary to cross the distance with a boat with 4 oars. The average speed of a 4-oar gajeta was three nautical miles per hour. The oarsmen would take 15-minute breaks every two hours. A two-oar boat was able to cross 2,5 miles per hour.
The distance between Betina and Zadar is 24 miles and this voyage would take 8 hours, without the breaks.
