Orhan Pamuk: A modest manifesto for museums

Orhan Pamuk on museums, the text follows. Original link: http://en.masumiyetmuzesi.org/page/a-modest-manifesto-for-museums    A MODEST MANIFESTO FOR MUSEUMS I love museums and I am not alone in finding that they make me happier with each passing day. I take museums very seriously, and that sometimes leads me to angry, forceful thoughts. But I do not have it in me to speak about museums with anger. In my childhood there were very few museums in Istanbul. Most of these were historical monuments or, quite rare outside the Western world, they were places with an air of a government office about them. Later, the small museums in the backstreets of European cities led me to realize that museums—just like novels—can also speak for individuals. That is not to understate the…

Read to me!

We have joined the national campaign “Read to me” so we’ve read several stories to the kids in the museum this morning. They told us they love reading very much and their parents read stories to them too. For the occasion we borrowed some children’s stories from the library and decorated the museum a little bit. The children told us they loved the stories we’ve chosen for them ❤️, it was very illustrative, and they would definitely come for a visit again! They took a look arround the museum afterwards as well!

We visited the island Ugljan

On the island of Ugljan there is a village Preko that we visited along with our colleagues from the Zora Folklore Society. Our visit was quite useful since we have seen the process of making different weaven decorative ethnic items. We expect them to show their skills in making kanica and spara again in Betina for all who would be interested in learning how to make traditional decorative items. We as well will try to develop our own skills in this technique.  During our Week of Folkore this summer we hope to set up their play too!

Night of Museums 2017

This year’s event Night of Museums was successful in our Museum. Over 400 visitors came to see the Museum’s collection followed by the event programme, exhibition and the concert. The subject of this year’s event was Music, great performers of music and its influence on society. We have chosen to set up the exhibition of sound players through the past century. There were 14 different items collected and described by their name, type, year of origin and the owner. People really liked the exhibition, some of them were quite emotional about it since it brought back happy memories. Just after the opening we’ve had a bus full of visitors from Dubrovnik who came to see the Museum’s collection with the guidance of our curator. They really…

Kids’ little boat is repaired and sailing again!

Our little workshop In the shipyard has been successful and kids have done a great job! They were shaping the wood, taking off little shells from the bottom, painting, tying the ropes, installing all other parts of the boat and the rudder. The kids found small paddles too! They carried the boat together from the Museum to the water polo pool and launched it into the sea. Boats are sailing every day – we don’t know exactly where, we’ll wait untill their stories sail back to us. Check out our gallery of photos from the workshop.

Themes and colours of Betina – artistic young talents are found!

Yesterday was quite a cheerful evening! There were so many children gathered on a workshop that was held outside our Museum. The kids were pretty motivated about their artistic assignments. Sketches very soon turned out to become beautiful pictures inspired by some typical details of the village. The kids draw houses, rooftops, seagulls, olive trees, flowers and other details of nature, but especially those related to sea and ships – masts, sail poles, bows, wooden oarlocks, waves, clouds, sun… Blue was definitely a dominant colour on our workshop! Children’s drawings will soon be travelling the world since Betina Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding will turn them into postcards that will be available at our reception. Well done artists!

Betina Week of Folklore Customs and Traditions

On the ocassion of this year’s 50th anniversary of Zora Folklore Society, and 20th annual Folklore Festival being held in Betina, members of Zora impressed us all with its dynamic programme. We enjoyed the Evening of Poetry when Mirela Klarin and Branko Pavlov were reading some of their own songs, while Silvijo Tomas and Matija Kapov have read us some old folk songs of the village.                         Kids took over the second evening of the week. The smallest group performed their play. Folklore group from the Murterski škoji Elementary School performed traditional dances, while Acting group performed a short comedy play that made everyone on the square laugh. Kids Folk Ensemble Zora performed the…
