HOW TO MAKE A WOODEN BOAT
Boatbuilding is preceded by a discussion between a boat owner and a boatbuilder. Boat owner has to decide on a type and purpose of his desired boat, maritime area in which the boat will be used, its dimensions, drive and specify all the details the boat will be fitted with. Taking into account all the set parameters, boatbuilder begins with the preparation of drawings. PREPARATION OF DRAWINGS After an agreement is reached, the boatbuilder commences with boat design. First, he draws bow stem and stern frame (colloquially, ašta), and after that a midship section (šest). The boat can have from one to three sections of the same dimensions. Contribution to Understanding the Shipbuilding in Betina
The villages Betina and Murter on the island of Murter were formed in the 14th and 15th century. Domestic population has practiced almost exclusively agriculture and cattle breeding since their inception. In the coming centuries, they expanded considerably their possessions by leasing the surrounding islands and the mainland as well as the Kornati and Žut – Sit island group. Owning a ship has become essential for every family. As far as we know, the first shipyard in Betina was founded by the shipbuilder family Filipi from Korčula in the mid-18th century, initiating the centuries-old tradition of building wooden boats. The Days of Wooden Shipbuilding
For the 4th time the museum is the organizer of The days of wooden shipbuilding. The event will be open on August 3 with the exhibition Island Visions by the author Ana Troskot Bajić. Ana, in her own words – a self-styled, free-styled artist, will show us her vision of the island Murter through beautiful sculptures of island’s scenes. Maritime Historian, and by recent – Doctor of Science, Zrinka Podhraški Čizmek, will present a valuable work of the Croatian Maritime Regesta in the 18th Century – Sailing on the Adriatic. The author continues the work of her grandfather, Nikola Čolak, in the fifties of the 20th century, and deals with over 4000 documents about our history, captains, ships, merchants, stories and events throughout the 18th century. The first of them, Ante Brkan’s photo exhibition, is actually introducing the summer schedule. The exhibition is executed in collaboration with the Gallery of Fine Arts of the National Museum in Zadar and Betina Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding joins the 100th Anniversary of the birth of photographer Ante Brkan. The creation of our museum’s permanent exhibition was made possible thanks to the photographs owned by Betina Shipyard that the author had taken during his three visits to Betina in the middle of the past century. EXHIBITION: BRKAN & BETINA
Brkan & Betina – Photography Exhibition from the Collection of the Gallery of Fine Arts of the National Museum in Zadar, provides an insight into Ante Brkan’s impressions of Betina, captured during his three visits to the town in the second half of the 1950s. Besides the photographs depicting the landscapes of the town, residential, sacral and public architecture, and portraits of its citizens, this exhibition includes rather valuable shots testifying about the importance of shipbuilding in Betina in the middle of the last century, and those who contributed to the creation of that heritage as well.
